Welcome to the website of the Applied Economic Theory Reading Group at Tilburg University.

The group is open to all active researchers at CentER, from young, enthusiastic research master students to less young but equally enthusiastic faculty members… The idea is for us to commit to read and discuss papers at the frontier of research (recently published or in working paper format).

Each academic year, the group strives to meet 5-8 times, each time for an hour.

What are the rules? There is no need to register. People interested in receiving information about the group can subscribe to a mailing list (https://lists.uvt.nl/mailman/listinfo/tisem-appl-econ-theory ) and consult this website. However, intermittent consumption is not allowed: researchers should decide whether they want to join or not, but should not consider it an option to show up when they feel like it or to take without giving back. As the name indicates, we’ll do this as a group!

In particular, attendees should come prepared. That is, they should have read the paper ahead of the meeting. During the meetings, we will try to focus on two goals: (i) understanding the mechanics of the models presented, and (ii) assessing the quality and relevance of the papers covered. All participants are expected to contribute to both goals, by not leaving it to the presenter alone to comment on the paper.

This year, we will experiment with a new formula. Students from research master micro elective courses will present. They will have 45 minutes max to present the paper; they cannot use slides, only the chalk and the blackboard; they will not try to present all the variants and all the results included in the published paper but will instead focus on presenting the base model and the main result as clearly as possible. The last 15 minutes will be used to discuss the contribution and relevance of the paper.
